Challenge

Volta had shipped four products in eighteen months and each one looked like a different company. Engineers were rebuilding the same button weekly, the marketing site had drifted from the app entirely, and every new hire designed from scratch because there was nothing to design from.

Strategy

We audited every interface in production before proposing anything — three hundred components, most of them near-duplicates. The system was designed backwards from what engineering already had, so adoption did not require a rewrite. Designers and engineers were in the same room from the first week.
